Yachting: What to pack
You've tucked away your sallopettes, and memories of snow-topped mountains are far behind you. Summer in Europe is here, and you're in desperate need of vitamin sea.
When a hotel won't cut it, you need a yacht to make the world feel that little bit more accessible. To have the freedom to cruise from port to port, from marina to bay. To disconnect from the humdrum of daily life.
But how do you pack for a week on board? Space onboard is a premium so packing light is key- think capsule wardrobe; here are some suggestions:
We are totally into hammam towels. Not only do they look great, they’re compact too.
We recommend Dock & Bay's light weight, absorbent, quick-dry, compact towels. Far more fun than most micro-fibers, you'll be the smartest crew in port.
Non-slip deck shoes
If you're not competent on a yacht, wearing shoes while at sea is a safety precaution to stop you slipping. We're loving Sperry's Original Vida Boat Shoe in metallic rose gold - safety needn't mean fugly.
Waterproof / splash proof camera
You'll be spending so much time in and around the water. For peace of mind and to capture all the action, why not opt for a Sunny Life waterproof disposable camera.
These Sunnylife inflatables have fast become the stars of Instagram. Kit yourself out with a floating flamingo, toucan or unicorn and float around the seas in style. Other options include beach balls, drink holders and lie-on floats.
A splash proof backpack or, better still, a dry bag so that you can carry your belongings to shore in a dinghy. For the more fashion conscious, we would recommend a Hunter mini top clip backpack but if you want to look like you're part of the crew, you can't go wrong with a trusty Musto.
If you're a first timer or know you're prone to motions sickness, it's best to be prepared with acupressure bands. Steering clear of pharmacy grey and the resultant harsh tan lines, we opt for Queasy Beads which, mixed in with a few boho bangles, look a bit more beach chic than beach geek.
If you're planning to channel your inner surf chick with effortlessly tousled locks, we can't recommend Bumble & Bumble's Surf Spray enough. But, as all hair types are different, we'd suggest browsing their summer collection to perfect the right look for you.
It's always good to go polarised but it's especially important on a yacht to reduce glare from the water. Our favourite sunnies of the season are Ray-Ban's original aviators in blue for a nautical feel.
It's hard to get away from the sun on a yacht. While cruising, it’s best to stay on deck as the interior gets very hot and increases risk of seasickness. For that reason, we would recommend high factor sunscreen that's also water resistant. Kiehls Activated Sun Protector Lotion in SPF 50 is a multitasking, water-resistant option for face and body. It's formula is designed for sensitive skin, offering potent UVA/UVB protection with a meticulously researched, age-fighting blend that includes vitamin E.
Beach Cover up
From beach to yacht to glam, we can't get enough of Dodo Bar Or's tassel-trim maxi
Rye's Zing polka-dot triangle bikini gives us life!
Inspired by Brazil's Copacabana, we love Frescobol Carioca's Slim-Fit Short-Length Printed Swim Shorts.
Think cool in the cabin whilst respectable for eating brekkie on deck. Three J NYC's Olivia Striped Cotton-Poplin PJ's get our vote
Space saving and flexible from day to night, espadrilles are a great shoe to pack for your next yachting holiday. For him, we suggest Castañer's Pablo's in light blue. And for her, we are so in love with these Christian Louboutin Pacha tasseled velvet espadrille slides.
Whilst this list isn't exhaustive (we'll let you decide what to wear to the yacht club for dinner and how many bikinis to take) the above are items that may vary from what you'd choose for a hotel or villa holiday. We also recommend you use a soft holdall or suitcase that can be backed into a bilge (outer surface of a ship's hull) for the duration of your stay.
From here on in, it's plain sailing.
