Explore the most colourful cities in the world

The sights, sounds and vibrancy of other countries and cultures really bring us to life when travelling. Thankfully our world is home to many a colourful city.

If you need a pick-me-up on your next trip, try one of these destinations:

Burano, Italy

When you practically share a postcode with Venice, you’ll likely be overlooked by your neighbour’s renowned canals. However the small island of Burano, located on the same lagoon as Venice, is well worth a visit to brighten up your day.  Once voted second on the Forbes 'most beautiful places' list, the town’s colourful history was begun by the island’s fisherman who painted their properties so that they could see them while they were out fishing. Today, the island has become a curated gallery, and paintjobs require government approval to align with their planned colour pattern.

The multi-cultural heritage of Bo-Kaap, which blends Malaysian, African, Indian and Sri Lankan histories in South-Africa, results in a vibrant and fascinating mix of art, music, literature and architecture throughout the district. The area is known for its distinctive pastel coloured houses set to the backdrop of Table Mountain.

Curaçao, Caribbean

This Dutch Caribbean island has a rich and varied culture, and has developed huge vibrancy. In downtown Willemstad, a Unesco World Heritage site, architecture takes inspiration from brightly coloured Dutch colonial buildings combined with a tropical vibe.

Wroclaw, Poland

Whilst the majority of tourists head to Poland’s landmark destinations of Warsaw and Kraków, lesser known Wroclaw is arguably the country’s prettiest city. Its colourful market square (Rynek), bordered by boldly painted medieval architecture reflects the city’s youthful and creative vibe. Wroclaw is one of the most colourful cities in the world and it’s up there as one of the most photogenic too

Guatape, Colombia

Guatape is a sight to behold; not only the most colourful town in Colombia, potentially the most colourful town in the world. The entire village, which rests on a lake 8 hours north of Bogotá, is painted to include fresco-style illustrations depicting stories - all put together by the families who live in them.

Menton, France

Menton, Monaco's colourful neighbour

Tucked neatly behind Monaco and known as 'the Pearl of France’, Menton is the last stop on the French Riviera. Not quite as flashy as it’s prominent neighbours, the picturesque town features a quaint clock tower which jostles for space amongst tall pastel painted houses backed by the mountainous alps. The town prides itself on the lemon and orange groves that grow in the surrounding hills and the annual Fête du Citron which certainly adds to the colour and flavor of the region.
